Minions and Monsters

MINIONS & MONSTERS Now Playing at Cinelounge | Rated PG | 1 hr 30 min

Set roughly 40 years before the events of the original Minions film, Minions & Monsters transports Illumination's beloved yellow troublemakers to the golden age of Old Hollywood — and the result is the franchise's most movie-obsessed, film-lover-friendly chapter yet.

Our story centers on two brand-new Minions, James and Henry, who find themselves in Hollywood at the very dawn of cinema. After their accidental appearance on a film set catches the camera's eye, the Minions become bona fide movie stars overnight — throwing lavish parties, living in a grand mansion, and inspiring legions of fans to don overalls and goggles in their honor.

Their 15 minutes of fame prove short-lived, however. When sound arrives and the era of "talkies" takes hold, the unintelligible Minionese-speaking crew finds themselves out on their ear — stars without a studio, dreamers without a screen.

Undeterred, the Minions hatch a new plan: make a monster movie of their own. They join forces with a cutesy Cthulhu-like creature on a quest to track down real monsters to cast in their picture — with predictably catastrophic consequences for the world at large.

What sets Minions & Monsters apart is its genuine, infectious love of cinema. The film's richest passages are soaked in loving film references — Modern Times, Safety Last!, and Citizen Kane among the classics that come in for playful pastiche treatment — alongside a mile-a-minute barrage of visual jokes that rewards movie lovers of all ages. From Sunset Boulevard to The Artist, Singin' in the Rain to Babylon, Hollywood's transition to sound cinema has long been fertile ground for filmmakers to revisit — and it proves equally happy territory for the Minions.

The result is a clear creative peak for the series: a Minions film with an actual idea at its core, proof that the pill-shaped devils are best served as stars rather than sidekicks. Featuring voice performances from Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Allison Janney, and Trey Parker, and directed by Minions co-creator Pierre Coffin, this is a summer animated comedy that's fully, madly moviosa.

AnimationPT1H30MPG2026-07-01
